Lilac has woody stems, which prefer a long diagonal cut with a knife. This allows them to absorb plenty of water, as lilac needs a great deal of water. Place the lilac stems in a clean vase with water. Add the flower food to the water in the correct proportion.
Ideally, place the lilac in a cool spot and not next to a fruit bowl, in a draught or in bright sunlight.
Check regularly whether the lilac has enough water and top up the water if necessary. Ideally, change the water daily. After a few days, cut the stems again at an angle.
