Tulip care tips

Tulips are a feast for the eyes and their cheerful appearance awakens anticipation of spring.

In the 16th century, the tulip was a symbol of wealth and worth more than gold. Today, they are affordable, but their symbolism is stronger than ever: Tulips represent love and affection.

With a little care, tulips will last for about 5-7 days. The cooler they are kept, the longer you can enjoy them.

1. The right vase for tulips

Choose a clean, tall, narrow vase for your tulips rather than a short, bulbous one. First, one that's about two-thirds the height of the tulips to ensure the heads are well-stabilized, and second, one that can be filled about halfway with water.

For the approx. 35 cm long tulips from Tom Flowers we recommend the TF Signature Glass Vase Small .

2. Fill the vase with water

Fill the tulip vase with cold water so that the stems are about halfway submerged. Cold water keeps the tulips fresh and vibrant.

Dissolve the enclosed care product completely in the water before placing the stems in the water.

3. Remove leaves

Strip a densely leafed tulip stem down to one or two leaves, leaving them on the stem as decoration. Excess foliage wastes the tulip's energy, which would be better spent on flowering.

At the end, no leaves should be sticking out into the water.

4. Cut tulips correctly

Cut the stems of the tulips straight across with a sharp knife, about 1-2 cm.

After cutting the tulips, place them immediately in the prepared vase so that the cut surfaces do not dry out and no air gets into the water channels of the stems.

5. No sun, warmth and fruit

To prevent the tulips from wilting or rotting too quickly, do not place them in direct sunlight, in a place that is too warm, or near fruit.

Tulips need regular care

Tulips can absorb a lot of water through their stems. Make sure the tulips always have enough water, change the water every two days, and re-cut the stems.

Good to know:

One of the characteristics of tulips is that they continue to grow in the vase!

A very special characteristic, which means that either the stems should always be trimmed neatly or you should choose a vase that's about two-thirds the height of the tulip. This allows these spring beauties to lean elegantly against the wall and maintain a sleek, upright posture until the end. The flower heads—especially those of double tulips—continuously gain weight and will quickly droop if the vase is too short.

Tips & Tricks for Tulips

How long do fresh tulips last in a vase?

It's natural that the lifespan of fresh tulips cannot be accurately predicted. Top-quality, day-fresh tulips should stay fresh for 5-7 days with proper care. However, the actual lifespan depends on many factors, such as proper handling, regular maintenance, and, finally, temperature: The warmer it is, the faster tulips wilt.

How do you properly cut tulips in a vase?

Tulips can be cut straight across with a clean, sharp knife. This maximizes water absorption without damaging the water channels in the stem.

Why not place tulips next to fruit?

Never place your tulips next to a fruit bowl. Ripe fruit emits ethylene, a gas that causes premature wilting.

Why shouldn't you put tulips in the sun?

Never place tulips in direct sunlight or any other warm location. Otherwise, the flowers will evaporate more water than they can absorb through their stems and will quickly die of thirst.

Why shouldn't the leaves reach into the water?

Leaves that extend into the water promote the formation of bacteria in the water. These, in turn, attack the cut flowers, leading to faster wilting.

What water temperature for tulips in a vase?

We recommend placing tulips in cold water. This keeps them fresh and vibrant.

What is the significance of tulips?

Tulips generally symbolize love and affection. The meaning varies depending on the color.

Insider tip?

Tulips are even happier if they can spend the night in a cooler spot with temperatures between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius. This extends their freshness and shelf life.
