Delphinium care tips

The magnificent, tall delphinium with its lush flower clusters evokes summer feelings and exudes romance with its distinctive colors. The larkspur, also known as "delphinium," is a real eye-catcher with its airy stems.

With a little care, delphiniums will give you joy for about 5-7 days.

1. The right vase for delphiniums

Choose a tall, large vase for delphiniums, so that at least half of the stems are submerged in water. Most importantly, use only a clean vase.

For the approximately 80 cm long delphinium from Tom Flowers we recommend the TF Vase Large .

2. Fill the vase with water

Fill the vase with cold water so that the stems are at least halfway submerged or just below the leaves.

Dissolve the enclosed care product completely in the water.

3. Remove leaves

Remove all the leaves up to just below the blossoms. It's best to pluck them off with your fingers. The remaining leaves shouldn't be allowed to protrude into the water later.

4. Cut delphiniums correctly

Cut the delphinium slightly diagonally with a sharp knife or TF flower scissors .

After cutting, place the delphinium immediately in the prepared vase so that the cut surfaces do not dry out and no air gets into the water channels of the stems.

5. No sun, warmth and fruit

To prevent delphiniums from wilting or rotting too quickly, do not place them in direct sunlight, in a location that is too warm, or near fruit.

Delphinium needs regular care

Delphiniums can absorb a lot of water through their stems. Make sure the delphinium always has enough water. Change the water every two days and cut the stems again.

Tips & Tricks for Delphinium

How long does fresh delphinium last in a vase?

It's natural that the lifespan of fresh delphiniums cannot be precisely predicted. Top-quality, day-fresh delphiniums should stay fresh for 5-7 days with proper care. However, the actual lifespan depends on many factors, including proper handling, regular maintenance, and, finally, temperature: The warmer it is, the faster delphiniums wilt.

How do you properly cut delphinium in a vase?

Delphiniums can be cut slightly diagonally with a clean, sharp knife or TF flower scissors . This maximizes water absorption without damaging the water channels in the stem.

Why not place delphiniums next to fruit?

Never place your delphinium next to a fruit bowl. Ripe fruit emits ethylene, a gas that causes premature withering.

Why shouldn't you put delphiniums in the sun?

Never place delphiniums in direct sunlight or any other warm location. Otherwise, the flowers will evaporate more water than they can absorb through the stem and will quickly die of thirst.

Why shouldn't the leaves reach into the water?

Leaves that extend into the water promote the formation of bacteria in the water. These, in turn, attack the cut flowers, leading to faster wilting.

What water temperature for delphiniums in a vase?

We recommend placing delphiniums in water at room temperature.

What is the significance of delphinium?

Larkspur stands for loyalty, health and cheerfulness.

Good and important to know

It is important to note that delphinium is highly poisonous. It should be kept away from children, dogs, and cats.
