Delphinium care tips

The magnificent, tall Delphinium with its lush flower spikes evokes summer feelings and radiates romance with its special colours. The Delphinium, also known as “Delphinium”, is a real eye-catcher thanks to its stems reaching into the air.

With a little care, Delphinium provides lasting enjoyment for ca. 5-7 days.

1. The right vase for Delphinium

Choose a large, tall vase for Delphinium, so that at least half of the stems stand in the water. Most importantly: use only a clean vase.

For the ca. 80 cm long Delphinium from Tom Flowers, we recommend the TF Vase Large.

2. Fill the vase with water

Fill the vase with cold water so that the stems then stand in the water at least up to the halfway point or just below the leaves.

Dissolve the enclosed care agent completely in the water.

3. Remove leaves

Remove all leaves up to just below the flowers. It is best to pluck them off with your fingers. The remaining leaves must not reach into the water later.

4. Cutting Delphinium correctly

Cut the Delphinium slightly at an angle with a sharp knife or the TF flower scissors.

After cutting, place the Delphinium immediately into the prepared vase, so that the cut surfaces do not dry out and no air enters the water channels of the stems.

5. No sun, heat or fruit

To protect the Delphinium from wilting or rotting too quickly, do not place it in direct sunlight, in a location that is too warm, or near fruit.

Delphinium needs regular care

Delphinium can absorb a great deal of water through its stems. Make sure that the Delphinium always has enough water, change the water every two days, and cut the stems fresh again.

Tips & tricks for Delphinium

How long does fresh Delphinium last in the vase?

It is in the nature of things that the lifespan of fresh Delphinium cannot be predicted precisely. Delphinium that is fresh daily and of the highest quality should remain fresh for 5 - 7 days with good care. The actual lifespan, however, depends on many factors such as correct handling, regular care and, lastly, the temperature: the warmer it is, the faster Delphinium wilts.

How do you cut Delphinium correctly for the vase?

Delphinium can be cut slightly at an angle with a clean, sharp knife or the TF flower scissors. This maximises water absorption without damaging the water channels in the stem.

Why should Delphinium not be placed next to fruit?

Never place your Delphinium next to a fruit bowl. Ripe fruit emits ethylene – a gas that leads to premature wilting.

Why should Delphinium not be placed in the sun?

Never place Delphinium in full sun or in another warm location. Otherwise the flowers evaporate more water than they can absorb through the stem and dry out within a short time.

Why should the leaves not reach into the water?

Leaves that reach into the water promote the formation of bacteria in the water. These in turn attack the cut flowers, which leads to faster wilting.

What water temperature for Delphinium in the vase?

We recommend placing Delphinium in water at room temperature.

What does Delphinium symbolise?

Delphinium symbolises loyalty, health and cheerfulness.

Good and important to know
