Peonies are the stars of spring. Their beautifully large blooms not only delight gardens, but also make a real must-have in vases.
Whether pale pink, burgundy, or coral, the bright colors of peonies are a real eye-catcher and fill any room with a spring-like atmosphere.
To keep peonies fresh for as long as possible, we'll show you our tips for caring for peonies below.
Choose a medium-sized and clean vase for the peonies so that the flowers are submerged in water up to half the stems.
For the approximately 50 - 60 cm long peonies from Tom Flowers we recommend the TF Vase Medium .
Fill the vase for peonies with lukewarm water so that the stems are at least half submerged in water.
Dissolve the enclosed care product completely in the water before placing the stems in the water.
Remove all leaves and side shoots of the peonies from the bottom up except for 1-2 leaves.
The remaining leaves must not protrude into the water.
Cut peonies diagonally with a sharp knife or TF flower scissors .
After cutting the peonies, place them immediately in the prepared vase so that the cut surfaces do not dry out and no air gets into the water channels of the stems.
To prevent peonies from wilting or rotting too quickly, do not place them in direct sunlight, in a location that is too warm, or near fruit.
Once the peonies are properly established, they need to be cared for regularly: Change the water every 2-3 days and trim the peonies again with a sharp knife or scissors as explained above.

It's natural that the lifespan of fresh peonies cannot be accurately predicted. Top-quality, day-fresh peonies should stay fresh for four to six days with proper care. However, their actual lifespan depends on many external factors. Generally speaking, the warmer it is, the faster the peonies fade.
Peonies should be cut diagonally with a clean, sharp knife or TF floral shears . This maximizes water absorption without damaging the water channels in the stem.
Never place your peonies next to a fruit bowl. Ripe fruit emits ethylene, a gas that causes premature withering.
Never place peonies in direct sunlight. Otherwise, the flowers will evaporate more water than they can absorb through their stems and will quickly die of thirst.
Leaves that extend into the water promote the formation of bacteria in the water. These, in turn, attack the cut flowers, leading to faster wilting.
For peonies in a vase, we recommend lukewarm water.

Peony blossoms may be slow to open. In some cases, this can take up to a week. To speed up this process, we recommend placing the peonies in warm water.
Ants are often found wherever peonies grow. Ants aren't a nuisance in this case, but rather cause the peonies to open. Peonies secrete a sticky sugary sap that crystallizes outside the flowers and sticks them together. This sugary sap attracts ants, which consume it and simultaneously help the flowers open more easily. If too much sugary sap remains, peonies may not open at all.
