Chrysanthemum care tips

Chrysanthemums, with their diverse colors and shapes, are real eye-catchers. Known as the queen of autumn flowers, certain chrysanthemums are now available as cut flowers year-round.

In addition to their vibrant color, chrysanthemums are also known for their longevity. With regular care, chrysanthemums can bloom in a vase for up to 10 days. Below are our care tips for chrysanthemums:

1. Suitable vase for chrysanthemums

Choose a large, tall vase for the chrysanthemums, ensuring at least half of the stems are submerged in water. Use only a clean vase.

For the approx. 70cm long chrysanthemums from Tom Flowers we recommend the TF Vase Medium .

2. Fill the vase with water

Fill the vase with cold water so that the stems are at least half submerged. Dissolve the included care product completely in the water.

3. Remove leaves and shoots

Remove all leaves and side shoots from the bottom to about one-third below the flowers. The remaining leaves should not protrude into the water.

4. Cut chrysanthemums correctly

Cut chrysanthemums slightly diagonally using a sharp knife or TF flower scissors .

After cutting, place the chrysanthemums immediately in the prepared vase so that the cut surfaces do not dry out and no air gets into the water channels of the stems.

5. No sun, warmth and fruit

To prevent the chrysanthemums from wilting or rotting too quickly, do not place them in direct sunlight, in a place that is too warm, or near fruit.

Chrysanthemums need regular care

Chrysanthemums evaporate a lot of water through their leaves and flowers. Therefore, it's important to repeat the steps explained above every few days to ensure the chrysanthemums always have enough water.

Tips & Tricks for Chrysanthemums

How long do fresh chrysanthemums last in a vase?

It's natural that the lifespan of fresh chrysanthemums cannot be accurately predicted. Top-quality, day-fresh chrysanthemums should last up to 10 days with proper care.

How do you properly cut chrysanthemums in a vase?

Chrysanthemums should be cut diagonally with a clean, sharp knife. This maximizes water absorption without damaging the water channels in the stem.

Why not place chrysanthemums next to fruit?

Never place your chrysanthemums next to a fruit bowl. Ripe fruit emits ethylene, a gas that causes premature withering.

Why shouldn't you put chrysanthemums in the sun?

Never place chrysanthemums in direct sunlight. Otherwise, the flowers will evaporate more water than they can absorb through their stems and will quickly die of thirst.

Why aren't the leaves allowed to reach into the water?

Leaves that extend into the water promote the formation of bacteria in the water. These, in turn, attack the cut flowers, leading to faster wilting.

What is the ideal water temperature for chrysanthemums in a vase?

For chrysanthemums, cold water in the vase is ideal.

Can you dry chrysanthemums?

Chrysanthemums can be dried, but this takes some time. Let the chrysanthemums dry upside down in a dry, dark, and warm place for about two to three weeks.

What is the significance of chrysanthemums?

The chrysanthemum—from the Greek "golden flower"—symbolizes happiness, health, and long life. However, the flower has slightly different meanings around the world. In Japan, for example, it represents the sun, light, and immortality.
