Amaryllis care tips

Christmas time is amaryllis time: No flower is more suited to the contemplative and cold season than the amaryllis. This impressive flower, also known as the hippocastanum, enchants our homes with the most beautiful Christmas colors: dark red, red, white, or even orange, apricot, and bicolor red and white.

To ensure that the Christmas magic of the Amaryllis lasts as long as possible, we show you our care tips here.

1. Suitable vase for Amaryllis

Choose a large, tall vase for the amaryllis. Amaryllis flowers can be quite heavy, so it's important that the vase supports the stems well. Use a clean vase.

For the approx. 70cm long Amaryllis from Tom Flowers we recommend the Tom Flowers Vase Medium .

2. Fill the vase with water

Only fill the vase with cold water to a depth of about 5-10 cm. If the amaryllis is placed too deep in the water, the soft stems can quickly begin to rot. Dissolve the included care product completely in the water before placing the stems in the water.

3. Cut Amaryllis correctly

Cut amaryllis straight across with a sharp knife or flower scissors.

Note: Amaryllis are poisonous. To be safe, wear gloves when handling them. Or wash your hands afterward.

The ends of the stems tend to fray or curl, so tape the stem ends all the way around with a standard, transparent adhesive strip.

After cutting the amaryllis, place it immediately in the prepared vase so that the cut surfaces do not dry out and no air gets into the water channels of the stems.

4. No sun, warmth and fruit

To prevent the amaryllis from wilting or rotting too quickly, do not place it in direct sunlight, in a place that is too warm, or near fruit.

Amaryllis need regular care

Amaryllis evaporate a lot of water through their flowers, and their stems also secrete a thick sap that makes the water cloudy. Therefore, it's important to repeat the steps explained above frequently to ensure the amaryllis always have plenty of clean water.

How long do fresh amaryllis last in a vase?

Top-quality, day-fresh amaryllis, whose flowers are still closed at the time of delivery, should bloom for up to 14 days with proper care.
