Amaryllis Care Tips

Christmas time is Amaryllis time: No flower fits the contemplative and cold season better than the Amaryllis. The impressive flower, also known as the Knight's Star, enchants our home in the most beautiful Christmas colors: dark red, red, white or even orange, apricot and bicolor in red and white.

So that the Christmas magic of the Amaryllis lasts as long as possible, we show you our care tips here.

1. Suitable vase for Amaryllis

Choose a tall vase for the Amaryllis. The flowers of the Amaryllis can be very heavy, so it is important that the vase supports the stems of the Amaryllis well. Use a clean vase.

For the approx. 70cm long Amaryllis from Tom Flowers, we recommend the Tom Flowers Vase Large or, if shortened, Medium.

2. Fill vase with water

Fill the vase with only about 10 cm of cold water. If the Amaryllis is too deep in the water, the soft stems can quickly start to rot. Dissolve the enclosed care product completely in the water before placing the stems in the water.

3. How to cut Amaryllis correctly

Cut Amaryllis straight with a sharp knife or floral shears.

Note: Amaryllis are poisonous. Therefore, wear gloves for safety when handling Amaryllis. Or wash your hands afterwards.

The ends of the stems tend to fray or curl up. Therefore, tape the stem ends all around with a standard, transparent adhesive tape.

Immediately after cutting, place the Amaryllis in the prepared vase so that the cut surfaces do not dry out and no air enters the water pathways of the stems.

4. No sun, heat and fruit

To protect the Amaryllis from wilting or rotting too quickly, do not place it in direct sunlight, in a too warm place, or near fruit.

Amaryllis need regular care

Amaryllis evaporate a lot of water through their blossoms, and the stems also secrete a viscous plant sap that clouds the water. Therefore, it is important to frequently repeat the steps explained above so that the Amaryllis always have enough clean water.

Amaryllis Tips & Tricks

How long do fresh Amaryllis last in a vase?

It is in the nature of things that the lifespan of fresh Amaryllis cannot be precisely predicted. Day-fresh Amaryllis of the highest quality, whose flowers are still closed at the time of delivery, should bloom for up to 10 days with good care. However, the effective lifespan depends on many factors such as correct handling, regular care and finally the temperature: the warmer it is, the faster Amaryllis wilt.

Never place your Amaryllis next to a fruit bowl. Ripe fruit emits ethylene - a gas that causes premature wilting.

We recommend placing Amaryllis in cold water.
