- The Alstromeria, also known as the Peruvian lily, exudes a touch of exoticism in any home. Its playful and uniquely spotted blooms make it a real eye-catcher. Although this exotic flower appears very delicate and fragile, with a few simple tips, it will bloom in a vase for up to two weeks.
Alstromeria care tips
1. Suitable vase for alstromeria
Choose a medium-sized, tall vase for the alstromeria, so that about half of the stems are submerged in water. Be sure to use a clean vase.
For the approximately 70cm long Alstromerias from Tom Flowers, we recommend the TF Vase Medium.
2. Fill the vase with water
Fill the vase with cold water so that the stems are approximately half submerged. Dissolve the included care product completely in the water.
3. Remove leaves
Remove all leaves from the stem end to at least half.
The remaining leaves must not protrude into the water.
4. Cut Alstroemerias correctly
Cut alstromerias slightly diagonally using a sharp knife or TF flower scissors .
After cutting, place the alstromeries immediately in the prepared vase so that the cut surfaces do not dry out and no air gets into the water channels of the stems.
5. No sun, warmth and fruit
To protect the alstromeries from wilting or rotting too quickly, do not place them in direct sunlight, in a place that is too warm, or near fruit.
Alstromerias need regular care
Alstroemerias evaporate a lot of water through their leaves and flowers. Therefore, it's important to repeat the steps explained above every few days to ensure the alstroemerias always have enough water.

Tips & Tricks for Alstroemerias
How long do fresh alstromerias last in a vase?
It's natural that the lifespan of fresh alstromerias cannot be accurately predicted. Top-quality, day-fresh alstromerias should stay fresh for up to 14 days with proper care. However, the actual lifespan depends on many factors, such as proper handling, regular maintenance, and, finally, temperature: The warmer it is, the faster alstromerias wilt.
How do you properly cut alstromeria in a vase?
Alstroemerias should be cut diagonally with a clean, sharp knife. This maximizes water absorption without damaging the water channels in the stem.
Why not place alstromeria next to fruit?
Never place your alstromeria next to a fruit bowl. Ripe fruit emits ethylene, a gas that causes premature flowering.
Why shouldn't you place alstromerias in the sun?
Never place alstromerias in direct sunlight. Otherwise, the flowers will evaporate more water than they can absorb through the stem and will quickly die of thirst.
Why aren't the leaves allowed to reach into the water?
Leaves that extend into the water promote the formation of bacteria in the water. These, in turn, attack the cut flowers, leading to faster wilting.
What is the water temperature for alstromerias in the vase?
We recommend placing alstromerias in cold water.
How can you dry alstromeria?
Due to its nature, the Alstromeria is not suitable for drying.
What is the significance of alstromeries?
The alstromeries represent friendship, devotion and solidarity.
